Description

Cross Cedar Street, walk west across Freeman Avenue and take a left to view the Hinkly House Museum. Built in 1892 of Sioux quartzite, quarried and hauled on horse-drawn stone boats from the Blue Mound Quarry north of Luverne, it served as the residence of pioneer Luverne businessman and early day mayor, R.B. Hinkly. The two lions at the front entrance were carved by a Norwegian stone cutter, Knute Steine, in 1895. The name, HINKLY, is displayed in a panel of stained glass. Leaded or stained glass transoms imported from England are featured in the main floor rooms. The word WELCOME is engraved in the oak parquet floor. Oak paneling with beveled mirrors lines the dining room walls and stairway. In the library, you will find beautiful storage doors reaching to the ceiling, which were carved by a one-armed artisan. The Hinkly House is open Thursdays from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. or by appointment to tour the Hinkly House contact the Luverne Chamber of Commerce, 888-283-4061
